Opposition Politician Boris Nadezhdin Flees Russia to Paris

Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin announced on Monday that he has left Russia for France following a government crackdown that disqualified him from running in September's parliamentary elections. In a video shared via Telegram from Paris, Nadezhdin stated, "Good news: I'm alive and free. Unfortunately, not in Russia for the time being."

His departure follows a series of legal sanctions used to eliminate his candidacy for the State Duma, including a "foreign agent" designation by the Ministry of Justice and a court fine for displaying "extremist symbols" in a video featuring Alexei Navalny.

Nadezhdin has a history of attempted challenges to the administration of Vladimir Putin. He previously sought to run in the 2024 presidential election, but the Supreme Court of Russia disqualified him after ruling that thousands of his campaign signatures were invalid.
