Trump Administration Ends TPS for Thousands of Haitian Migrants

The Trump administration is terminating Temporary Protected Status for approximately 350,000 Haitians and thousands of others following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

The Donald Trump administration is ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Haitian immigrants and several thousand nationals from Syria, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen. The process follows a June 25 Supreme Court of the United States ruling that affirmed the administration's authority to terminate these protections and determined such decisions are not subject to judicial review.

On July 10, 2026, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services granted short-term work permit extensions to manage the transition. Haitian permits are now valid until July 24, while those for Syrians and other listed nationals expire on July 17. Despite these reprieves, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security notified employers on July 11 that these foreign workers must be dismissed in the coming weeks. Some employers in Massachusetts and Ohio reportedly terminated workers prematurely due to confusion over the shifting deadlines.

Community leaders and advocacy groups have organized protests in Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, and Springfield. They warn that deportation to Haiti would be a "death wish" given the current gang control and civil unrest, which has led the State Department to maintain a Level 4 travel advisory. Advocates are now urging the Senate to pass Bill 4814, which would extend Haitian TPS through January 2029, while the administration maintains that the program had become a de facto permanent immigration scheme.
