Brazil Holds General Election for Presidency and Parliament
Brazilian voters cast ballots Sunday for president and parliament as incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva faces a challenge from Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.
Brazilian voters head to the polls on Sunday, October 5, 2026, for a general election to select the next president, members of parliament, and governors across all 26 states and the federal district.
Incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party is seeking an unprecedented fourth term. He faces a challenge from Senator Flavio Bolsonaro of the right-wing Liberal Party. A Datafolha poll conducted on September 24 projects Lula da Silva leading the first round with 40% of the vote, while Flavio Bolsonaro follows with 36%.
If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote in Sunday's contest, a runoff election is scheduled for October 25 to determine the winner.
