UK Government Settles Lawsuit With Sacked Official Sir Olly Robbins
The British Government reached an out-of-court settlement with former Foreign Office official Sir Olly Robbins after he challenged his dismissal over a security vetting controversy.
The Government of the United Kingdom has reached an out-of-court settlement with Sir Olly Robbins, the former permanent under-secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Sir Robbins had initiated judicial review proceedings in July 2026, alleging that his April 2026 dismissal was based on irrational reasons and lacked fair procedure.
Sir Robbins was sacked by former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer following a controversy over the security vetting of Lord Peter Mandelson for the role of ambassador to the United States. Foreign Office officials reportedly overruled a failed background check to clear Mandelson's appointment, a move Sir Keir claimed he was unaware of. Lord Mandelson was subsequently sacked as ambassador in September 2025 after the release of US government files detailing his correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein.
Sir Keir previously justified the dismissal by stating he did not accept the explanation provided by Sir Robbins regarding why security clearance was granted. However, the FDA union, which represented Sir Robbins, characterized the sacking as scapegoating intended to mask the former Prime Minister's own misjudgment. While the government acknowledged Sir Robbins' distinguished three-decade career in public service, the financial terms of the settlement remain undisclosed.
