Tinubu Wins APC Nomination Amid South-East Political Tension

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the All Progressives Congress nomination for the 2027 general election, winning the nationwide primary with 10.99 million votes against challenger Stanley Osifo, who received 16,503 votes. Following the victory, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele pledged to deliver at least 10 million votes from the South-West geopolitical zone, citing GDP growth, increased oil production, and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as reasons for continued leadership.

Despite the party's momentum, political tension emerged in the South-East. The African Democratic Congress in Enugu State declared that the region would not support Tinubu's re-election. This opposition follows reports that Minister of Works David Umahi suggested during a project inspection in Ebonyi State that the region could lose federal infrastructure projects if it failed to back the president.

Adolphus Ude, the Enugu State Secretary of the ADC, condemned Umahi's alleged comments as an attempt to blackmail independent citizens. Ude challenged the administration's claims of regional development, asserting that the South-East lacks a rail line and has been excluded from flagship projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, contrasting with Bamidele's presentation of the highway as a key administration achievement.
