FlyDubai Copilot Attacks Captain on Tel Aviv-Bound Flight

A FlyDubai copilot attacked the captain during a flight to Tel Aviv, forcing an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia and sparking international security investigations.

A FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday after a copilot allegedly stabbed the captain in the cockpit. The aircraft, carrying 182 people, plummeted to 15,000 feet during the struggle. Captain Smit Machchhar resisted the assailant long enough to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and subdue the suspect while other crew members regained control of the plane.

Investigations revealed the suspect is an Omani national who had previously been barred from flying by Oman due to extremist views before being hired by the UAE-based airline. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the copilot underwent Islamist radicalization and acknowledged a security loophole in pilot vetting. In response, Israel announced increased security precautions and vetting for all pilots flying into the country.

The incident has caused diplomatic friction. The United Arab Emirates suspended all commercial flights to Israel, though both nations agreed to begin repatriation flights on Friday. While U.S. President Donald Trump suggested early information links the attack to Tehran, Israeli officials stated there is currently no evidence of Iranian involvement. Emirati investigators are leading the probe into the event, which UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash characterized as a terrorist act.
