Germany and Azerbaijan Negotiate Increased Gas Supplies in Berlin

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan conducted an official visit to Berlin from July 20 to 21, 2026, to solidify a strategic energy partnership with Germany. The visit began with economic discussions involving the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, focusing on the Middle Corridor transport route, smart agriculture, and tourism.

On July 21, Aliyev met with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The leaders discussed a Joint Declaration on the Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership and the role of Azerbaijan as an "island of stability" regarding Europe's energy security. Aliyev expressed readiness to increase gas exports to the European Union, though he noted that further infrastructure investment is required to expand capacity.

Chancellor Merz emphasized the necessity of diversifying gas imports after Germany ceased purchasing Russian gas four and a half years ago. During a joint press conference, Merz noted that the meeting had been previously postponed due to the war with Iran. He highlighted how both nations are affected by global conflicts, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine and instability in the Middle East, asserting that lasting stability can only be achieved through negotiations. The leaders concluded that intensifying energy cooperation remains the primary focus of future bilateral talks.
