Democrats Divide Over Third Impeachment of Donald Trump
Democratic leaders are split over whether to pursue a third impeachment of Donald Trump following allegations of authoritarian behavior in his second term.
Democratic leaders are divided over whether to pursue a third impeachment of Donald Trump during his second term. Critics of the administration point to a pattern of authoritarian behavior, specifically the use of the National Guard in American cities and the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection as a secret police. Other concerns include political retaliation against law firms and universities.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries has remained noncommittal on the issue, stating that Democrats have neither "ruled anything in" nor "ruled anything out." In contrast, Senator Tammy Duckworth and former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel have argued against impeachment. They suggest the party should instead focus on passing legislation to improve affordability for Americans.
Some observers warn that a lack of constitutional pushback may embolden the president to further abuse power, including potential escalations of the war in Iran.
