Boeing Forecasts Further Cost Overruns for Air Force One
Boeing expects additional expenses to deliver two new VC-25B aircraft by 2028, as the program remains four years behind schedule.
Boeing executives announced at the Farnborough Airshow that they expect further cost growth on the VC-25B program to ensure the delivery of two new Air Force One aircraft by 2028. Steve Parker, CEO of Boeing's defense unit, stated that the additional costs are necessary to finalize wiring, structures, and certifications to ensure the aircraft meet all technical specifications.
The program began in 2018 with a $3.9 billion fixed-price contract but has since seen costs exceed $5 billion. Boeing has absorbed approximately $2.8 billion in charges as the project falls four years behind its original 2024 delivery target. The company intends to begin testing the first new aircraft next year.
To maintain presidential transport during the delay, Donald Trump has used a modified Boeing 747 donated by Qatar and upgraded by L3Harris. However, security concerns recently prompted the president to utilize a legacy VC-25A aircraft for a flight from Turkey instead of the Qatari-donated bridge aircraft.
