Italy and United States Partner to Increase LNG Exports

The Government of Italy and the United States announced a partnership on September 8, 2025, to increase the export of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Italy. Following discussions in Rome, Italian Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum pledged to establish a secure flow of LNG to support Europe's efforts to phase out dependence on Russian energy supplies.

The agreement focuses on expanding export infrastructure in the United States and encouraging investments in LNG import and regasification infrastructure within Italy. While the two nations did not commit to specific quantities or timeframes, the partnership aims to create more resilient supply chains.

This agreement builds on previous discussions held in April between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump. Italian officials emphasized that the transatlantic route provides greater reliability and security than other geopolitical routes currently available to Europe.
