Nigel Farage Faces Multiple Probes Over Undisclosed Million-Pound Gifts
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is under parliamentary investigation for failing to declare millions in gifts and staffing support from cryptocurrency billionaires and a convicted fraudster.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK and MP for Clacton, is facing multiple investigations by the UK parliament's standards watchdog over allegations he failed to declare significant financial benefits. Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Daniel Greenberg is probing an undisclosed £5 million gift from Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage maintains the funds were an unconditional personal gift for security and thus exempt from disclosure.
Further scrutiny emerged following a Sunday Times report alleging that George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster and former U.S. federal prisoner, provided Farage with security, social media staff, and a London townhouse near Buckingham Palace in the year before the 2024 general election. While Farage registered some smaller flights and trips from Cottrell, Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde and the Labour Party have demanded a second probe into these omissions. Labour has also requested an Electoral Commission investigation to determine if Cottrell was a permissible donor.
Farage has dismissed the allegations as a baseless establishment hit job and threatened legal action against The Sunday Times. Upon returning from Washington DC on July 7, he clashed with Sky News journalists at Heathrow Airport, warning of serious consequences if his family were harassed. US President Donald Trump signaled his support on Truth Social, suggesting an anti-Trump playbook is being used against Farage.
The controversy coincides with internal infighting at Reform UK headquarters and a decline in the party's national polling support. If the watchdog finds a serious breach of the Code of Conduct, Farage could face suspension from the House of Commons, potentially triggering a recall petition and a by-election in Clacton.
