Andy Burnham Pledges to Resolve IPP Sentence Crisis

Andy Burnham pledged to find an early resolution to the crisis surrounding Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentences. Although the UK abolished IPP sentences over a decade ago, more than 2,000 people remain incarcerated under the old regime.

Critics argue that resolving the IPP scandal would significantly ease the burden on the overcrowded prison system, potentially freeing up space equivalent to four prisons. This initiative comes as the prison service faces broader systemic failures, including critical staffing shortages and a lack of rehabilitation opportunities for inmates.

Parallel to these efforts, there are calls for the Government of the United Kingdom to implement mandatory court considerations for future protection orders in domestic abuse cases. Proponents argue these measures are necessary to mitigate risks associated with the early release of offenders.
