EU and NATO Skeptical Midterms Will Curb Trump Influence

European Union and NATO officials doubt the November 3 U.S. midterm elections will reverse Donald Trump's tariffs or restore military and financial support for Ukraine.

European Union and NATO officials expressed skepticism that the November 3 U.S. midterm elections will limit the influence of Donald Trump on international policy. Even if Democrats gain control of the House or Senate, EU diplomats do not expect a reversal of tariffs on Europe or an increase in U.S. financial support for Ukraine.

This outlook has prompted Brussels to seek 70 billion euros from other allies to fill the funding gap for Ukraine. Simultaneously, NATO allies anticipate that a December Pentagon review will lead to scaled-back U.S. military deployments in Europe, regardless of the election results.

Some analysts suggest a domestic political loss could embolden Trump to escalate tensions in Iran or Ukraine to distract from internal failures. When asked about the situation, European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho stated, "We will not comment on any elections in the EU or abroad."
