Trump-Led Redistricting Efforts Secure Republican House Advantage

President Donald Trump led a push for mid-decade congressional redistricting to secure a Republican advantage for the 2026 midterm elections. This effort resulted in the redrawing of maps in several GOP-controlled states, including Texas, Florida, Missouri, Ohio, and North Carolina, which netted Republicans at least 10 additional right-leaning seats.

Democrats attempted to mitigate these gains through their own redistricting efforts. California Governor Gavin Newsom successfully led a counter-redistricting push to eliminate GOP seats in California. However, Democrats faced significant legal setbacks elsewhere, including a Virginia Supreme Court decision that struck down a Democratic redistricting ballot measure.

The legal landscape shifted further in favor of Republicans after the Supreme Court of the United States gutted portions of the Voting Rights Act, ruling that race should not dictate district redrawing. While Republicans saw some losses in Utah and faced defiance from state senators in Indiana, the overall redistricting trend has largely locked in a Republican advantage for the battle to control the House of Representatives.
