Sue Gray Describes No. 10 Environment as Unbearable

Former chief of staff Sue Gray described the working environment at No. 10 Downing Street as unbearable during an interview with the Political Currency podcast. Gray alleged the office suffered from a boys club atmosphere and extreme tension, claiming she feared colleagues recorded her conversations to leak them to the media.

Gray expressed disappointment that former Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not act on her concerns regarding staff briefing journalists against her. She also disputed reports that she attempted to sideline aide Morgan McSweeney, describing the incident as a practical effort to find a better room for staff.

Former colleagues disputed these claims, with one adviser attributing Gray's experience to paranoia and another denying the existence of a boys club. Keir Starmer, who was forced out of office by his MPs, previously admitted he was wrong to appoint Gray to the role. Now a Labour peer, Gray rejected speculation that she would return to government under the current administration led by Burnham, stating she is enjoying life outside of government.
