French Police Lose Control Amid Widespread Looting and Protests

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admits police have lost control of several cities as protests against austerity and budget cuts devolve into looting and mayhem.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that French police have "lost control" as widespread protests devolved into looting and mayhem across several cities. The unrest included the ransacking of luxury stores and the burning of the Hôtel de Ville in Limoges. While the demonstrations began peacefully to protest budget cuts in education, they expanded to include broader grievances regarding austerity policies, pensions, and entitlements, drawing support from labor unions and socialist and communist parties.

The turmoil follows the recent suspension of a 2023 reform introduced by President Emmanuel Macron to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, a move that had previously triggered paralyzing protests. The crisis is set against a backdrop of severe economic strain, with public debt reaching 116% of GDP and government spending accounting for 57% of GDP, the highest social protection spending in the OECD.

Economist Thomas Piketty attributed the state's woes to a "capitalist logic" of underinvesting in the public sector and undertaxing the wealthy. Other analysts suggest the violence is linked to the poor assimilation of immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East.
