German Foreign Minister Pledges Support During Kyiv Visit

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Saturday, August 22, 2026, to demonstrate solidarity ahead of Ukraine's 35th Independence Day. During meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Wadephul pledged continued military and financial support, focusing on strengthening air defenses and establishing long-term security structures.

The visit emphasized preparations for the upcoming winter, with Germany providing generators and energy equipment to protect critical infrastructure. The Federal Foreign Office of Germany described Ukraine as an important security partner, stating that Germany intends to learn from Ukrainian experiences in managing hybrid threats and modern warfare.

Diplomatic talks occurred amid intense combat. Russian strikes targeted Kyiv, Boryspil, and Zaporizhzhia, while an attack on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih killed between 15 and 16 people. Wadephul condemned these actions as the indiscriminate murder of civilians, noting that July and August were the deadliest months for civilians in over four years.
