Rahul Gandhi Leads Opposition Protest Over Alleged Vote Theft
Rahul Gandhi hosted INDIA bloc leaders and activists in New Delhi to coordinate protests and legal action against alleged electoral roll irregularities.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi hosted a series of strategic gatherings at his New Delhi residence on Tuesday to unify the INDIA bloc, student organizations, and civil society. These meetings followed a March for Democracy in the capital, where opposition leaders and activists protested alleged vote theft and irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll.
During the events, which included a high-tea meeting attended by Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gandhi emphasized a collective movement to protect democracy, stating that "all protests are one." The opposition is using these gatherings to develop a unified roadmap for upcoming parliamentary sessions and to consolidate their position against the central government.
Parallel to the street protests, the opposition filed a joint petition with the Supreme Court of India. The petition names the Election Commission of India and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as parties, demanding Kumar's resignation. This legal escalation follows a refusal by the Chief Justice of India to meet with opposition leaders, who were told the matter is sub-judice. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate characterized the agitation as a campaign against the theft of democratic mandates, suggesting the opposition may intensify its marches to force the government to stop such activities.
