Andy Burnham Takes Power and Cuts Electricity VAT

Prime Minister Andy Burnham assumed leadership at 10 Downing Street and announced a VAT cut on electricity bills alongside new pension policies.

Andy Burnham has assumed leadership at 10 Downing Street, appointing John Healey as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The new government immediately introduced a VAT cut on electricity bills scheduled to take effect in October and pledged to adhere to the Labour Party manifesto.

A central pillar of this commitment is the maintenance of the state pension triple lock, which guarantees annual increases based on the highest of inflation, average earnings, or 2.5%. Despite this pledge, the Office for Budget Responsibility has recommended accelerating the increase of the state pension age to 68 by 2037 to address ballooning costs and affordability strains.

In a move to expand retirement savings, the government approved legislation to extend auto-enrolment for workplace pensions to all individuals aged 18 and over, removing previous income level restrictions. Following these announcements, Charlotte Kennedy of Rathbones cautioned savers against making major financial decisions based on unconfirmed policy speculation.
