Prime Minister Andy Burnham Removes VAT on Electricity Bills

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the government will remove the 5% VAT charge on domestic electricity bills from October 1 until April. The policy aims to provide "breathing space" for families during the cost-of-living crisis and is expected to save the average household approximately £45 per year.

Chancellor John Healey stated that funding for the tax cut will be sourced by canceling the Digital ID programme. Major energy providers, including British Gas, Octopus Energy, and E.ON Next, have welcomed the measure and confirmed that savings will be applied automatically to customer bills.

Despite the announcement, critics and experts warn the impact is limited. The End Fuel Poverty Coalition urged the government to implement further energy debt relief, while financial expert Martin Lewis noted that a predicted 3.1% rise in the price cap from October may offset the savings. Personal finance expert Joe Lytwyn advised households to avoid becoming complacent, urging families to maintain proactive budgeting and long-term financial planning despite the government support.
