South African Labor Minister Urges Employers to Release Voters

Nomakhosazana Meth urged employers to allow staff time off to vote in the November 4 Local Government Elections following a presidential public holiday declaration.

Minister of Employment and Labour Nomakhosazana Meth urged employers to release their staff to vote in the Local Government Elections scheduled for November 4. The call follows a decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare the election day a public holiday to facilitate the civic process.

Meth stated that the right to vote is a "cornerstone of our democracy" and called for cooperation between employers and employees to balance business operations with constitutional rights. She emphasized that the government must create an environment where all eligible citizens can participate meaningfully in the democratic process.

The Department of Employment and Labour announced it will collaborate with NEDLAC social partners, including organized business and labor, to promote awareness of workers' rights and encourage active citizenship.
