Security Service of Ukraine officers and military intelligence personnel engaged in a shootout in Kyiv during a search operation targeting a Russian plot.
Officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) engaged in a shootout on September 2, 2026, on Shumskoho Street in the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv. The confrontation occurred while SBU officers were conducting a search related to an alleged Russian Federal Security Service plot to target Stepan Kaplunov, the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps.
The SBU reported that a group of individuals used vehicles to block their operation, leading to the deployment of the Special Operations Centre Alpha to end the armed resistance. The clash resulted in several injuries and the detention of three HUR officers. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has since opened a pre-trial investigation into threats and the attempted murder of law enforcement officers.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the heads of both agencies to inform the public about the incident. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the President's office, called for an impartial investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, stating that no one has the right to abduct servicemen or carry out criminal orders with impunity. The incident underscores persistent coordination tensions between Ukraine's security agencies.
