Atiku Abubakar Challenges Tinubu's Umrah Trip Transparency
President Bola Tinubu departed for Makkah to perform Umrah amid accusations from Atiku Abubakar that the pilgrimage is a cover for a trip to France.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja on October 29, 2026, for Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform the Umrah pilgrimage. The Presidency stated the trip is intended for spiritual reflection and prayers for Nigeria's peace, unity, stability, and progress. Before leaving, the President commissioned new equipment at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress candidate Atiku Abubakar challenged the official narrative, accusing the President of using the pilgrimage as a "smokescreen" for a trip to France. Atiku claimed intelligence suggests the President may only make a brief appearance in Makkah before traveling to France, questioning if the journey relates to the President's health or a reported $20 billion loan request involving a French business partner.
Atiku demanded that the Presidency disclose the full itinerary and provide daily, date-stamped photographic and video evidence of the President participating in the rites at the Kaaba. He argued that any official trip presented as a national mission is a matter of public interest and requires transparency regarding funding and daily engagements. President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria next week.
