Social Security 2027 COLA Forecasts Range From 3.5% to 3.6%

The Social Security Administration will announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, with current forecasts projecting a benefit increase between 3.5% and 3.6%.

The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on October 14, 2026, with the increase taking effect in January 2027. Current forecasts suggest a benefit raise between 3.5% and 3.6%, which would surpass the 2.8% increase implemented in 2026. AARP estimates a 3.5% raise, while the Senior Citizens League recently lowered its projection to 3.6% from a previous estimate of 3.8%.

For a retired worker receiving the June 2026 average monthly benefit of $2,084.40, a 3.5% increase would add approximately $72.95 per month. The final rate is determined by average Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers readings from July, August, and September. Inflation forecasts for the 2027 raise were influenced by the tariff and trade policies of President Donald Trump, although the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated his sweeping global tariffs in February 2026.

In a separate development, the AARP Public Policy Institute released an analysis warning against a proposed shift to a flat-rate COLA system designed to address long-term funding shortfalls. The report estimates that such a system could result in cumulative losses for 80% of beneficiaries, with one hypothetical retiree losing approximately $77,900 over their retirement. This flat-rate model remains a proposal and has not become law.
