United Nations Prepares for Secretary-General Leadership Transition

The United Nations is preparing to select a new Secretary-General by January 1, 2027, amid growing calls for the first female leader.

The United Nations marked its 81st anniversary on October 24, 2026, as the organization begins preparations for a leadership transition. Secretary-General António Guterres will complete his second five-year term on December 31, 2026, with a successor scheduled to take office on January 1, 2027.

The selection process has prompted calls for the appointment of the first female Secretary-General to reflect the organization's commitment to gender equality. Potential candidates identified in the process include Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica, Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett of Guyana, María Fernanda Espinosa of Ecuador, and Lana Nusseibeh of the United Arab Emirates.

To finalize the appointment, the United Nations Security Council must first recommend a candidate, a process in which the five permanent members hold veto power. The United Nations General Assembly then performs the formal appointment.
