Pakistan and Google Partner to Boost AI and Digital Literacy
The Government of Pakistan and Google signed agreements to expand AI access, provide 150,000 career certificates, and enhance child online safety.
The Government of Pakistan and Google signed two major agreements between August 20 and August 21, 2026, to accelerate the nation's digital transformation and protect young users. The first agreement, signed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Google, establishes a Child Safety Programme. This initiative focuses on digital literacy and safety awareness for children and caregivers, providing localized tutorials in Urdu and English.
A second, broader memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad targets economic growth and technical innovation. Under this deal, Google will provide 150,000 career certificates in 2026 and grant students one year of free access to advanced AI tools, including Gemini and Google AI Plus. The partnership includes the creation of an AI Centre of Excellence in Islamabad to prepare youth for the global market.
These initiatives support Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's objective to grow the digital economy to $30 billion by 2030. The cooperation extends to integrating AI-powered analytics into the Federal Board of Revenue and utilizing AI for agricultural crop monitoring. To mark the expansion of its presence in the region, Google opened its first office in Islamabad.
