Iran Repatriates Crew After Ukrainian Strike in Caspian Sea

Iran repatriated the crew and the body of a sailor from a commercial cargo ship following a deadly strike in the Caspian Sea near the Volga River on July 26. The attack killed one person, injured several others, and severely damaged the ship's bridge.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, admitted that Ukrainian forces conducted long-range operations in the region. He stated the mission targeted a Russian warship and vessels believed to be transporting Iranian military goods.

Iran denied the ships were carrying military cargo, maintaining the vessel was a civilian ship. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Zelenskyy of authorizing the strike and labeled the action a violation of international law, threatening retaliation. The Kremlin condemned the incident, describing it as evidence of a growing threat from intensifying Ukrainian military operations.
