Tech Leaders Urge U.S. Government to Limit AI Regulation
Amazon and other major tech firms are lobbying the U.S. government to adopt industry-driven standards for AI to maintain competitiveness against China.
Chief Security Officer of Amazon Steve Schmidt and executives from Microsoft, OpenAI, AMD, and CoreWeave are urging the U.S. government to avoid restrictive artificial intelligence regulations. Schmidt argues that government intervention risks narrowing corporate scope and could "retard progress," suggesting instead that the industry should establish standards driven by customer needs.
During congressional testimony, these leaders claimed that heavy regulation hinders growth and weakens the ability of U.S. firms to compete with China. Sam Altman of OpenAI supported the need for regulation, provided it is "sensible regulation that does not slow us down."
In response to these concerns, the House included a provision in President Donald Trump's tax package to block states from enforcing new AI rules. House Speaker Mike Johnson linked this move to national security. The provision currently awaits a ruling from the Senate parliamentarian to determine if it meets the budgetary requirements necessary to avoid a filibuster.
