European Stocks Flat as Bond Selloff Offsets Corporate Gains

European stock markets remained largely flat Tuesday as rising bond yields and oil prices countered positive news for Reckitt Benckiser and Air Liquide.

European stock markets ended Tuesday largely flat as a global bond selloff neutralized positive corporate developments. While the pan-European STOXX 600 saw a slight increase, the FTSE 100 in Britain and the DAX in Germany both declined.

Bond yields climbed to significant highs, with Germany's 30-year government bond reaching a 15-year peak. This volatility was driven by rising oil prices linked to renewed fighting in the Middle East and hawkish signals from Kevin Warsh, the Chair of the Federal Reserve. These factors led investors to price in potential interest rate hikes from the European Central Bank for September.

Individual corporate news provided some upward momentum. Reckitt Benckiser Group shares jumped 5.2% after a jury ruled in the company's favor regarding claims that its premature baby products caused bowel disease. Similarly, shares of Air Liquide rose following reports that Elliott Investment Management had acquired a stake in the company.
