Tinubu Announces 30-Day Petrol Discount Amid Economic Criticism

President Bola Tinubu introduced a 30-day petrol discount to offset oil supply disruptions, sparking a debate over economic stability and production subsidies.

The administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu introduced a 30-day petrol discount to mitigate the effects of Middle East tensions and crude oil supply disruptions. Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele announced the price reduction, which the Presidency defended as a standard response comparable to measures used by leaders in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Political opponents rejected the move as insufficient. Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, dismissed the discount as "political optics" and a "reactive policy" that fails to address systemic unemployment and inflation. He argued that previous policies had already caused "unbearable price hikes across board" for Nigerians.

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, described the administration's actions as panic-driven. He proposed a production subsidy that would provide discounted crude to local refineries. Special Adviser Sunday Dare rejected this proposal, calling it "pure economic illiteracy" and stating that contractual obligations with international oil companies prevent the government from accessing the necessary volume of unencumbered crude.
