UK Posts Surprise £1.8 Billion Budget Deficit for July

The United Kingdom reported a surprise £1.8 billion budget deficit for July, increasing pressure on the government ahead of the October autumn budget.

The Office for National Statistics reported a surprise budget deficit of £1.8 billion for July, with total expenditure reaching £110.7 billion. This figure exceeded revenue by £700 million more than the previous year and contradicted expectations from the Office for Budget Responsibility, which had predicted the budget would be in balance.

Rising inflation-linked costs in government procurement, wages, debt interest, and welfare drove the spending increase. The deficit occurred despite the government collecting record self-assessed income tax receipts of £17.1 billion. Borrowing for the first four months of the fiscal year reached £56.7 billion, exceeding expectations by £2.3 billion, while public debt stands at 94.1%.

These figures create fiscal pressure for Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey as he prepares the autumn budget for October 28. Prime Minister Andy Burnham must now balance the need for market confidence with his policy goals to overhaul social care and revive council house building.
