UK Expands Warm Home Discount to Six Million Households

The Government of the United Kingdom expanded the Warm Home Discount scheme, making approximately six million households across Great Britain eligible for a £150 rebate on electricity bills this winter. A significant portion of this expansion includes between 250,000 and 345,000 additional households in Scotland that will now receive the credit automatically.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Energy Secretary, urged eligible billpayers on means-tested benefits to verify that their names are correctly listed on their energy accounts by August 23 to ensure the automatic credit is applied. The government confirmed that the Warm Home Discount will remain available through 2030/31.

In a separate effort to lower energy costs, Prime Minister Andy Burnham ordered the removal of VAT from domestic electricity bills effective October 1. This measure is expected to reduce the yearly Ofgem price cap by £45. Energy Secretary Fahnbulleh stated that the government's priority is to provide families with breathing space as they work to bring down overall energy bills.
