G20 Finance Meeting in Asheville Sparks Recovery Funding Protests

Financial leaders, central bank governors, and journalists from the world's largest economies gathered at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina, for a G20 finance track meeting. The event coincided with widespread local protests in Pack Square and along Merrimon Avenue, where demonstrators argued that federal assistance has failed to address the scale of the disaster caused by Hurricane Helene.

Donald Trump and his administration highlighted $5 billion in federal assistance provided for the region's recovery. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent maintained that the president has prioritized rebuilding and suggested the G20 event would provide a boost to the local tourism economy.

Local officials and residents disputed the adequacy of the funding, with some citing total damages as high as $60 billion. Governor Josh Stein reported that the state has received only about 16% of the funds necessary for rebuilding. Stein has requested an additional $10 billion from Washington to address the shortfall.
