Peter Obi Demands Accountability for 15.8 Trillion Naira Subsidy Savings
Peter Obi challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for fuel subsidy savings and borrowings following criticisms from Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi exchanged sharp criticisms over the administration of President Bola Tinubu. During a campaign event in Rivers State, Shettima defended the president's economic reforms, arguing that Tinubu inherited an economy near collapse and made necessary, difficult decisions. Shettima dismissed opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, claiming Abubakar was misled by voodoo economists and labeling Obi as politically irrelevant.
In response, Peter Obi issued a statement titled "Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability," challenging President Tinubu to account for 15.8 trillion naira saved from fuel subsidy removal and over 100 billion dollars in borrowings. Obi criticized the president's frequent foreign travel, reporting that Tinubu spent over 260 days outside Nigeria, and demanded measurable data on poverty reduction, education, healthcare, and electricity supply.
Obi further questioned the administration's handling of terrorism and insecurity despite government assurances. He argued that the public deserves to know how resources entrusted to the government have been utilized to impact the lives of citizens.
