EU Disburses €3.9 Billion for Ukrainian Drone Procurement

The European Commission transferred €3.9 billion to Ukraine for advanced drone technology as part of a broader €90 billion support loan program.

The European Commission began disbursing €3.9 billion on June 30, 2026, marking the first payment of a €6 billion tranche dedicated to Ukraine's drone procurement. This funding is a component of a larger €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, which allocates €60 billion for defense and €30 billion for budgetary assistance through 2027. This payment follows a €3.2 billion installment provided on June 25.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the investment aims to strengthen Ukraine's technological capabilities against Russia's invasion. Future disbursements under the loan program will expand to cover missiles, ammunition, and air defense systems. To ensure accountability, the Commission and EU member states are reviewing submitted contracts to verify that funds are used for approved procurements.

The EU Council reports that total military, financial, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine has reached €211.3 billion since the start of the war. Parallel to these defense efforts, the European Commission is seeking to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 2028, though it may exclude military-age men arriving without authorization from Kyiv.
