Alaska Election Officials Defend Ranked Choice Voting Amid Legal Threats

Former Alaska election officials reject claims that ranked choice voting delays results as Donald Trump directs a lawsuit to block potential Democratic certification.

Former Alaska election officials Gail Fenumiai and Jeremy Johnson have rejected claims that the state's Final Four Elections system, which uses ranked choice voting (RCV), causes delays in reporting results. They argue that delays stem from Alaska's geography and laws prohibiting the scanning of absentee ballots until after Election Day, a process further extended by a 15-day legal window for ballot arrivals.

These assertions counter arguments from the organization Repeal Now, which claims the RCV system is cumbersome and slow. Fenumiai and Johnson note that reporting delays existed under previous systems and are not a product of the current ranked choice mechanism.

The debate occurs amid heightened political tension as President Donald Trump directed the Justice Department to file a preemptive lawsuit to block the certification of Democrat Mary Peltola should she defeat Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan. The race is further complicated by the candidacy of Daniel J. Sullivan, a similarly named opponent. Supporters of the current system argue that ranked choice voting mitigates voter confusion by allowing ballots to transfer if a voter makes a mistake.
