National Park Service Backs Trump's Proposed Memorial Arch

The National Park Service released a 133-page report supporting a proposal by Donald Trump to construct a 250-foot-tall gilded memorial arch adjacent to the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. The agency concluded that Memorial Circle is the only historically appropriate location for the project, stating that alternative locations outside the circle are not reasonable avoidance alternatives.

While the report acknowledges the structure will disrupt the historical integrity and sightlines of dozens of landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Washington Monument, it argues that removing primary features or relocating the arch would fail to meet the project's purpose. The agency noted that the same characteristics making the site sensitive from a preservation perspective also make it the appropriate location for the undertaking.

This finding strengthens the administration's position against a legal challenge led by three veterans and a group of historians. Represented by the Public Citizen Litigation Group, the challengers argue that a project of this scale requires congressional approval rather than an executive decree. Attorney Nicolas Sansone stated the report confirms the project will have an enormous impact and transform the National Mall.
