Trump Claims Tariff Threats Prevented India-Pakistan Nuclear War

President Donald Trump claimed on July 9 that he prevented a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan by threatening both countries with 200 percent tariffs. Speaking from Air Force One at RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom, Trump asserted he settled eight wars in total and credited his specific personality and the strategic use of tariffs for these outcomes.

Trump specifically referenced a conflict that escalated following an April 2024 terror attack in Pahalgam. This event triggered Operation Sindoor, a series of Indian precision strikes. Trump alleged that the war had been raging for a week and that eleven planes had been shot down, bringing the two nations to the brink of nuclear exchange. He claimed that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised his intervention, suggesting the move saved 30 to 50 million lives.

Based on these claims, Trump suggested he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize more than any other recipient because of his unique ability to settle wars. He maintained that five of the eight wars he settled were resolved through the threat of tariffs.

The Government of India has consistently refuted these claims of American mediation. Indian officials maintain that the ceasefire was reached strictly through bilateral channels between the respective Directors General of Military Operations, contradicting Trump's account of U.S. involvement in the de-escalation process.
