Representative Thomas Massie Introduces Impeachment Articles Against Pete Hegseth
Representative Thomas Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth over alleged war crimes and violations of the War Powers Act.
U.S. Representative Thomas Massie has introduced eight articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, alleging a pattern of misconduct and illegal operations. The resolution accuses Hegseth of violating the 1973 War Powers Act, ignoring laws regarding civilian casualties during a seven-month war with Iran, and conducting extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean as part of the war on drugs. The articles further claim Hegseth illegally abducted former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threatened U.S. Senator Mark Kelly and other former service members who criticized the Department of Defense.
These legal challenges follow a "State of the Force" address Hegseth delivered at Quantico, where he proposed creating an Office of Religious Affairs, establishing a new "fortress" base for troops stationed abroad, and reducing the number of flag officers by up to 20 percent. He also announced that Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich would conduct a study on the future of warfare. During the address, Hegseth defended the war against Iran despite reports of 18 American deaths and $40 billion in costs.
Controversy has also mounted over Hegseth's proposal to livestream the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the 2009 Fort Hood attacker. The move drew criticism from Vice President J.D. Vance and caused President Donald Trump to express misgivings. While House Speaker Mike Johnson has adjourned the House until after the November midterms, polls indicate 51 percent of Americans approve of the impeachment proceedings.
