Germany Plans to Buy 15 More F-35 Fighter Jets

The Federal Government of Germany plans to purchase 15 additional F-35 fighter jets from the United States, raising its total planned fleet to 50 aircraft. This expansion builds upon a 2022 agreement for 35 jets intended to replace 85 aging Tornado fighters. The move aligns with NATO goals to increase collective spending to 5% of output over the next decade to counter threats from Russia.

The decision follows ongoing disputes with France over the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project. Germany and France have clashed over intellectual property rights and workshare, with France reportedly seeking an 80% share of the project. Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that differences remain regarding the configuration of the FCAS project.

While Merz has championed European defense autonomy, the increased reliance on U.S. aircraft suggests a pragmatic approach to immediate security needs. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is scheduled to meet U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth next week to finalize the acquisition details.
