Rahul Gandhi Demands Amit Shah's Resignation Over Student Police Brutality

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi sparked a major parliamentary row on July 29 and 30, 2026, by alleging that Union Home Minister Amit Shah authorized the use of pellet guns and electric batons against students protesting examination irregularities on July 20. During a debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Gandhi argued that Shah is either culpable for ordering the violence or incompetent for being unaware of it. He demanded Shah's removal from office and the establishment of an independent, Supreme Court-monitored high-powered committee to investigate the brutalities.

Government ministers, including Kiren Rijiju, Piyush Goyal, and Jitendra Singh, rejected the claims as a bundle of lies. They asserted that no firing occurred, only tear gas was used, and that legal authority for such orders rests with local magistrates rather than the Home Minister. Speaker Om Birla repeatedly intervened, demanding documentary evidence for the allegations and ordering the expunction of unparliamentary language, such as the terms idiot and andhbhakt, from the record.

Beyond the police action, Gandhi accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of capturing the Indian education system and treating ministers as mere symbols. This triggered further clashes involving Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Education Minister Prahlad Joshi. While the anti-paper leak bill was ultimately passed by voice vote, the session was marked by multiple adjournments and protests by the INDIA alliance at the Parliament complex.
