Amit Shah Launches 70 Lakh Tree Plantation Drive in Delhi

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Mission 70 Lakh Tree Plantation Campaign to restore Delhi's biodiversity and protect the city's Ridge forest areas.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, inaugurated the Mission 70 Lakh Tree Plantation Campaign in New Delhi on July 7, 2026. The initiative aims to plant 7 million trees across the city, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' appeal, which encourages citizens to plant trees in honor of their mothers.

The campaign focuses on transforming the Delhi Ridge into the city's green lungs. Over the next four years, the government plans to plant over one crore native plants, including 35 lakh large tree saplings and 65 lakh shrubs and medicinal plants. This effort includes the legal protection of 6,300 hectares of forest and the replacement of invasive species with native trees such as Peepal, Neem, and Jamun. The project further involves creating 70 ponds and eight special forests.

The New Delhi Municipal Council is supporting the drive with a Mega Tree Plantation event across 34 locations, targeting 600 trees and 50,000 shrubs. Alongside the environmental efforts, Shah inaugurated a high-security prison in Narela, an automated vehicle testing centre, and 300 electric buses. He also announced a partnership with the National Dairy Development Board to process 1,500 metric tonnes of cattle dung daily into biogas to reduce Yamuna river pollution.
