Senator John Kennedy Opposes Trump-Saudi Nuclear Agreement

Senator John Kennedy publicly broke with President Donald Trump over a controversial agreement to streamline the development of a civilian nuclear program in Saudi Arabia. The 30-year deal, signed by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, allows U.S. companies such as Westinghouse to help build the sector and permits Saudi Arabia to pursue domestic uranium enrichment and nuclear waste reprocessing. President Trump made the agreement contingent on the normalization of ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Kennedy argued that providing nuclear technology to a Gulf state is contradictory while the U.S. is simultaneously bombing Iran to prevent its own nuclear capabilities. He characterized the move as poorly timed, suggesting the global perception of the deal could undermine U.S. efforts in Iran.

The pact marks a significant shift from previous U.S. standards, as it reportedly lacks the International Atomic Energy Agency's Additional Protocol. Critics warn the agreement could trigger a regional nuclear arms race, particularly given Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's stated intention to pursue nuclear weapons if Iran does so. This rift follows other internal GOP tensions regarding the five-month war in Iran, which has seen the collapse of a recent ceasefire and renewed instability in the Strait of Hormuz.
