Texas Republicans Divide Over AI Data Center Expansion

Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott have championed the rapid proliferation of AI data centers in Texas as essential for national security and economic dominance. Key projects include OpenAI's 500 billion dollar Stargate project and a 40 billion dollar investment from Google, both of which have benefited from the removal of federal red tape.

This expansion has triggered an internal divide within the Republican party, particularly in rural districts where the facilities are located. State Representative Helen Kerwin and other legislators have called for an immediate pause on new developments to evaluate the impact on water depletion and electrical grid capacity. The tension has become severe enough that some long-time GOP members have left the party, and activist Rena Schroeder founded the Texas Coalition Against Datacenters after proposing a total ban on the facilities.

In response, the data center industry is attempting to protect its pro-business environment through a public relations campaign led by the nonprofit Texas Connects. Additionally, technology companies are increasing political influence, with Meta planning to distribute 65 million dollars via super PACs to politicians who support the AI industry ahead of the upcoming legislative session and midterm elections.
