Opposition Groups Demand President Tinubu Resign or Resolve Crises

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu faces calls for resignation from opposition parties and lawmakers following reports of worsening security and economic instability in Nigeria.

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives and the Conference of United Political Parties have called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign or immediately resolve Nigeria's deepening security and economic crises. Minority Leader Fred Agbedi urged the president to suspend all 2027 reelection activities to prioritize a six-month National Security and Economic Recovery Plan.

These demands follow reported mass abductions of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states and the death of retired Major-General Abubakar Rabe while in captivity. The National Human Rights Commission documented 390 killings and 202 kidnappings in May 2026. Additionally, opposition groups accused the administration of utilizing the judiciary to undermine political rivals, citing a Federal High Court order to deregister five parties.

President Tinubu rejected the calls for resignation, defending his record by citing the recruitment of 50,000 police officers and a N5.41 trillion defense budget. He claimed the military killed 13,000 terrorists over the past year.
