Elon Musk Spends $445 Million to Prevent Democratic Midterm Wins
Elon Musk donated over $445 million to Republican causes to block Democratic congressional wins and avoid investigations into his leadership of the DOGE service.
CEO Elon Musk has donated more than $445 million to Republican candidates and committees ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, marking an unprecedented level of spending by a single donor. Federal Election Commission filings show Musk contributed $77 million to his America PAC in early October and $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund. A primary focus of this spending is the Texas Senate race, where Musk is backing Attorney General Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico. In addition to Texas, funds have targeted competitive races in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Maine, and Alaska.
This financial surge coincides with threats from Democratic lawmakers to launch sweeping investigations if they regain control of Congress. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative James Walkinshaw have called for probes into the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk led. These potential investigations center on allegations that DOGE overstated its savings, eliminated hundreds of thousands of federal jobs, and accessed sensitive data on millions of Americans. Other lawmakers, including Representative Pramila Jayapal, have questioned Musk's government contracts and his alleged throttling of SpaceX Starlink and Starshield services in Ukraine.
Musk has responded to these threats on X, warning that those who pick fights with him should understand he will find out who is "pulling the strings" and come for them. Despite the spending, recent polls suggest a potential Democratic wave that could lead to Musk facing subpoenas, contempt of Congress charges, or the loss of critical federal contracts for Tesla and SpaceX.
