Ghanaians Petition ICC Over Xenophobic Violence in South Africa

Two Ghanaian nationals, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah and Emmanuel Kotin, submitted a petition to the International Criminal Court on July 15 requesting a preliminary investigation into xenophobic violence in South Africa. The petition alleges a pattern of widespread and systematic attacks, including murder, beatings, and looting, which may constitute crimes against humanity.

The petitioners accuse the government of President Cyril Ramaphosa of failing to prevent or punish these crimes. This legal action follows months of violent anti-immigrant protests driven by claims that foreigners contribute to unemployment and crime, resulting in several deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands of migrants.

Chrispin Phiri, a spokesperson for South Africa's foreign affairs ministry, dismissed the petition as opportunistic. He defended the nation's legal system, asserting that the country possesses a sophisticated domestic legal framework to combat discrimination.
