Russia and Ukraine Exchange Massive Overnight Drone and Missile Strikes

Russia and Ukraine conducted extensive overnight drone and missile strikes against each other on August 16, 2026, causing multiple civilian casualties and significant infrastructure damage. Russian strikes targeted Kyiv, Sumy, and Kryvyi Rih, killing at least three people and injuring more than 20. In Kryvyi Rih, a ballistic missile attack killed two people and injured 14, while a strike in Sumy resulted in one death.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, accused Russia of targeting civilian infrastructure and claimed that North Korean missiles were used in the attacks. He urged allies to release anti-aircraft missiles from warehouses to protect European lives.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces launched a massive drone campaign, including the largest attack on Moscow in over two years. Russian officials reported at least seven deaths and 13 injuries. In the Rostov region, five civilians were killed, and in Belgorod, a drone strike on a worker bus killed one woman. Ukrainian targets included a Bastion coastal missile complex in Crimea, a military airfield in Nizhny Novgorod, and the Progress rocket production facility in Samara.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces hit defense-industrial facilities in Kyiv and a cargo ship in Odesa. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that approximately 600 drones flew toward the capital overnight, though air defense systems intercepted many of the targets.
