UK Rejects EU Pressure to Tariff Chinese Vehicles

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds announced the UK will not impose tariffs on Chinese vehicles despite European Union concerns over market back doors.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds announced that the United Kingdom will not impose tariffs on Chinese vehicles, rejecting pressure from the European Union to align trade policies. Speaking during a trade trip to India, Reynolds stated that trade decisions are based on UK interests rather than requests from other countries, noting that the UK automotive sector is export-led.

The European Union, which has already implemented tariffs of up to 45% on Chinese electric cars and a quota on hybrid vehicles, expressed concern that the UK could serve as a back door for Chinese imports into the European market. Reynolds dismissed these claims, citing a lack of major Chinese manufacturers based in the UK.

This policy disagreement comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham seeks a real reset in relations with Brussels. A summit is scheduled for November 20 in Brussels to discuss the UK's place in Europe and potential EU membership. Reynolds acknowledged that rejoining the EU would void the UK's recent free trade agreement with India.
