Citizens Sue Donald Trump Over White House Media Bans

Six citizens filed a federal lawsuit against Donald Trump and top aides, alleging that banning critical news outlets from the White House violates the First Amendment.

Six private citizens, including a human rights advocate, a historian, and a student journalist, filed a lawsuit in a New York federal district court on Monday against Donald Trump and three top aides. The plaintiffs argue that the administration's policy of banning disfavored media outlets from the White House violates the public's First Amendment right to independent reporting and deprives citizens of essential information.

The lawsuit names Trump, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Communications Director Steven Cheung, and Secret Service Director Sean M. Curran as defendants. It seeks a declaration that the policy is unconstitutional and a broad injunction to protect all news outlets from future retaliation. The administration defended the policy, stating that media outlets spreading misinformation and defamation can report from outside the premises and that no person may demand access to the Oval Office.

This legal action follows separate challenges from news organizations including CNN, Politico, MSNOW, and the Associated Press. The latter filed suit after the White House barred its journalists for using the term "Gulf of Mexico" instead of "Gulf of America." Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has replaced traditional press pool management with White House control and integrated conservative influencers into the press room. He recently stated on Truth Social that he is considering moving the press corps off White House grounds to reclaim space for a swimming pool reconstruction.
